Background
As part of a nationwide development project, the Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ) expanded its hydrometeorological network by installing 141 new meteorological stations across Hungary.
Operating in the Carpathian Basin, meteorological measurements pose significant challenges due to highly variable climatic conditions, including both liquid and solid precipitation. Annual precipitation averages 500–700 mm, while some months may experience no precipitation at all.
Given these demanding conditions, OMSZ specified the highest accuracy requirements for precipitation measurement. During an extensive market evaluation, OTT Pluvio² proved to be the most suitable solution.
Measurement Task
The key requirements defined by OMSZ included:
- Reliable and precise precipitation monitoring at 141 sites nationwide
- High accuracy, even for very small precipitation amounts
- Mandatory use of the weighing principle (no tipping bucket systems)
- Full compatibility with existing telemetry and communication systems
Monitoring Solution
Before field installation, OMSZ conducted comprehensive laboratory tests using two OTT Pluvio² units, which were delivered within a very short timeframe.
Since all stations were required to operate on the existing communication network, the Pluvio² instruments were supplied as sensors only. Thanks to the wide range of available outputs, system integration was straightforward, enabling a system integrator to supply suitable data loggers for the complete network.
Results & Summary
Following one year of successful operation, OMSZ officially commissioned the new network and placed an additional order for 15 more OTT Pluvio² units.
Today:
- 60% of all meteorological stations in Hungary are equipped with OTT Pluvio²
- OTT Hydromet has become the exclusive supplier of precipitation gauges in Hungary
This project demonstrates the long‑term reliability, accuracy, and integration flexibility of OTT Pluvio² under demanding climatic conditions.
